  • With tool search, MCP tool names load first and definitions arrive when needed.

It is on by default, so many servers cost little up front, and connecting one mid-session does not break the cache.

  • MCP servers have three scopes: local, project and user.

Project means .mcp.json in the repo, shared through git. Local is the default and is stored per project in ~/.claude.json.

  • Everything after -- in claude mcp add goes to the server command untouched.

That is how a server's own flags avoid being parsed by Claude.

  • An .mcp.json entry with a url but no type is treated as stdio and skipped silently.

If a remote server never shows up, add "type": "http".

  • MCP tool output warns above 10,000 tokens and is capped at 25,000 by default.

Text results over 50,000 characters are saved to a file. MAX_MCP_OUTPUT_TOKENS changes the cap.

  • claude mcp remove deletes local tokens but does not revoke them.

Run claude mcp logout <name> first.

  • When a server name exists in several scopes, the winning entry is used whole.

Order is local, project, user, plugin, then claude.ai connectors. Fields are never merged.
